  • 'Hook into the Past:the Story of Mat Making in North East England'
  • Stories from Room for You Hospital Arts, compiled by Ellen Phethean
  • Not so long ago, home made hooky and proggy mats were essential to provide a bit of comfort and colour on bare stone or wood floors. They provided an activity that all the family (and often the neighbours) could join in and were a practical way of 'making something from nothing' by recycling old clothes and sacks.
The memories in this book have their origins all over the North East of England and sometimes beyond and span more than a century. As well as describing the tools and techniques of mat making, this fascinating social history sheds light on the realities of life for thousands of working class families in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The stories were collected by Room for You Hospital Arts and compiled by Ellen Phethean.
The book is published in soft back with 104 pages and illustrated in full colour throughout with new and archive photographs.
The price of the book is £9 and it is available from November 25th from good book sellers or by post from Tyne Bridge Publishing, Newcastle Libraries and Information Service, PO Box 88, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE99 1DX. Tel 0191 2774174; email: anna.flowers@newcastle.gov.uk
Please add £1 for post and packing and make sterling cheques payable to 'City of Newcastle upon Tyne'.

feltmaking

I make things from the stuff you might throw away. I love old books, fabric, wool, buttons, lace, beads…… anything really. I have a magpie mind! I love to find a new use for the things we consider as junk. I hope to give recycled materials the chance to function again as useful and beautiful objects.
I use discarded books, jumble sale finds, thrifted clothes and other items to make a variety of things.

Reduce, reuse, recycle ……. rejoice, relax, really enjoy your life!
