Staff

“The arts service is a vital non medical part of recovery and treatment for our cancer patients... The staff within the department value and acknowledge the vital contribution the arts team make to cancer services at NCCC.”Sarah Rushbrooke, Matron

Patients & Carers

“You don't expect it to be such a nice place to be.”

“I always feel like I've had a good day after I've been here.”

The beneficial impact of this project has been independently verified in two recent reports. In an article entitled 'Assessing the value of offering arts activities to patients and carers, the author states that 'Patients and their carers should be encouraged to consider participation in art. If staff were supported to spend time engaged in these activities it would help facilitate therapeutic relationships with patients and carers.' (Published in Cancer Nursing Practice, May 2010, Vol.9, No.4.)
The Northern Rock Foundation commissioned an evaluation of the project from The Learning Team in November 2009. This report says that 'There is conclusive that the project improves the patient and carer experience of attending the NCCC.' And 'There are clear benefits not only for patients, but also for nursing staff and other stakeholders.

We believe that our work can contribute to the patient/carers sense of emotional well-being and alleviate the stress of coming to hospital. Research carried out by the Clinical Trials Unit of NCCC has overwhelmingly borne this out as have the Patient Satisfaction Audits carried out by the NUTH Trust and testimonies given to the team by patients continually confirms this.
