‘Hook into the Past’ - The story of Mat making in the North East of Englan
‘Hook into the Past’ was an Oral History Project that aims to preserve the memories of mat making in the North East of England. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Northern Rock Foundation.
In addition to the successful book launch referred to above, there has been a programme of activities that has included:
Mat making workshops, which took place at the Beamish Museum, St. Mary’s Heritage Centre in Gateshead, the City Library Newcastle and Woodhorn Museum.
We have produced a DVD which includes interview excerpts, footage from our workshops, historical re-enactments we filmed at Beamish Museum and step-by-step instructions on mat making. The DVD is now available for sale £4.
There was a touring exhibition that consisted of examples of mat making, a memory book, an audio/visual presentation, copies of written memories and a display board.
The venues were: Woodhorn Museum, Beamish Museum, St. Mary’s Heritage Centre and the Shipley Art Gallery. The exhibition is currently at Newcastle City Library (until December 23rd).
Artists Ali Rhind and Rachel Phillimore also designed two large mat wall hangings for the Northern Centre for Cancer Care. They show plants used in cancer treatment. The making of these pieces was carried out with patients and at our public events.
